The Memory of Indians in Flanders Fields

It was at school in Goa that we first read John McCrae’s1 popular war poem, In Flanders Fields, much as the history teacher used it to emphasize its historical contexts as the English miss to drive home the literary devices within its poetic verse. While the recitation of the poem did convey a certain sense … Continue reading The Memory of Indians in Flanders Fields

Adeus Romuald. There is still so much more to do Romuald D’Souza SJ (1925-2019) was among the finest Jesuit educationists from Goa. Awarded the Padma Shri in 2010 for his contribution to education, Romuald had distinguished himself in the field of business management education first at the XLRI, Jamshedpur and later by founding two premier business schools: XIM, Bhubaneshwar and GIM, Goa. In his tribute to Romuald, Rinald D’Souza SJ contends how Romuald deployed his own spiritual heritage to influence his brand of business management education. For your #Halloween reading... First Point. This will be to see in imagination the vast fires, and the souls enclosed, as it were, in bodies of fire. While contemporary horror plots would not be found in 16th century Jesuit theaters, they bear some resemblance to the stories told by these innovative Jesuits—putting audiences face-to-face with evil and mortality. NEW BOOK | Antony Mecherry SJ Testing Ground for Jesuit Accommodation in Early Modern India: Francisco Ros SJ in Malabar (16th–17th Centuries). l+494 p. (Bibliotheca Instituti Historici Societatis Iesu, vol. 79), 2019. Full price € 60. In “Testing Ground for Jesuit Accommodation in Early Modern India: Francisco Ros SJ in Malabar (16th–17th Centuries)”, Antony Mecherry SJ explores the underlying dynamics of the accommodation experiments led by Francisco Ros SJ (1559–1624)—a Catalonian from the Jesuit province of Aragón—in the cultural and religious terrain of Malabar, in particular, among the region’s Christian communities. Mecherry’s historical analysis becomes a vital interpretative key to understanding the later mission launched by Roberto de Nobili SJ (1577–1656), the main proponent of accommodation in the non-Christian context of Madurai in South India. Most importantly, the study underscores the Jesuit mission in early modern India as the crucial meeting point of some of the most prominent promoters of accommodation in the first century of the Society of Jesus, including Alessandro Valignano (1539–1606) and Matteo Ricci (1552–1610). While divine inspiration has been the chief motivation for most religious or missionary vocations, chance encounters can provide an impetus to it. Among F N Souza’s earliest expressionist tendencies were his rather comical encounters with Jesuit priests at St Xavier’s College, Bombay where his artistic nudes did not go well with the aesthetics of Jesuit discipline. Nevertheless, F N Souza (1924-2002) went on to be one of independent India’s most acclaimed artists. He cofounded the Progressive Artists’ Group of Bombay that moved away from a more nationalist tradition in art emerging from Bengal to launch a more modernist expressionism within art in India. Jesuits celebrate Easter at the Mughal Court The Jesuits were the earliest Europeans to visit the Mughal court of Akbar. At the invitation of Emperor Akbar (1556-1605) and under the patronage of the Portuguese in Goa, the Jesuits established three missions among the Mughals. In a letter to his Provincial in Goa, Father Jerome Xavier (1549-1617) recounts the cultural exchange in the court and the celebration of Easter Sunday in 1611. Wishing you all a Happy Easter. The Shift in the Vatican Secret Archives On 4 March 2019, Pope Francis announced the opening of the archives of the pontificate of Pope Pius XII (1939-1958) within the Vatican Archives. Apart from the polarised debate on Pope Pius XII’s role during the World War II and the Holocaust, the Vatican Archives should reveal a much broader narrative as the period of this papacy was also at the centre of a shifting global Christianity and its rapid indigenisation. Feet that walk, hearts that see In the Summer of 2018, Rinald D’Souza SJ undertook the Camino Ignaciano — an Ignatian pilgrimage that traverses history, culture and spirituality through some of the most beautiful regions of Spain. The pilgrimage is walked with one’s feet, but takes a heart — as much as a mind — to see the world and journey with it. Along the Camino Ignaciano, one is led to gaze at the friezes of the many churches one encounters along the way. This detail from the twelfth-century romanesque Church of San Bartolomé in Logroño depicts scenes from the life of Christ as well as of the saint. Though it has been through much transformation and decay, it remains a timeless beauty. In this post, Rinald reflects on his journey with his lens. Walking the Camino Ignaciano The Camino Ignaciano is an Ignatian pilgrimage that recreates the sixteenth-century historical route (1522) of Ignatius of Loyola from his hometown in Azpeitia to the cave in Manresa where he underwent a transformative experience and wrote his classic, The Spiritual Exercises. Rinald D’Souza SJ reflects on his experience of walking the Camino. Contemplating Film: Making my first prints Last week, I made my first set of black and white photographic prints that were shot on film over the weekend. The results have been more than satisfying not only for what gradually emerged on paper in the darkroom, but for the photographic process itself. While my interest in photography grew from a fascination for images, my engagement with photographic processes had more to do with being a historian who was looking for sources. And what a happy meeting point between the two! But for now, let me dwell on the photographic process. The Making of a Poor Saint: Oscar Romero Much before the announcement of Pope Francis to canonise Oscar Romero a Saint of the Catholic Church, the people of Latin America had already begun to venerate their San Romero, ever since his martyrdom on 24 March 1980. His witness to the gospel message that informed a faith in favour of the poor is as relevant to us today as it was in his own lifetime. The Jesuit missionary Rodolfo Acquaviva SJ (1550-1583), and his translator companion, Francisco Henriques SJ, hold theological discussions at the Ibadat Khana (House of Worship) gathering of the Mughal Emperor, Akbar (1556-1605), within his palace at Fatehpur Sikri, near Agra. The illustration is a miniature painting made by Nar Singh and was adorned within the Akbarnama (The Book of Akbar). Welcome to the Historia Domus. Historia Domus explores Jesuit history from a South Asian perspective. It does so through the dialectic of faith and reason which is at the core of Jesuit engagement with the world. While Historia Domus has been understood as a “house history” of a specific Jesuit community, it is here reinvented for the web to reflect on Jesuit histories that could be seen as interconnected Jesuit global histories. And as far as the web remains interconnected its dynamic should enhance our interconnected engagement. Although writings on this site would eventually reveal a South Asian perspective, they make the world their domus, their home.
